Visiting Lesvos

Travel Information for Participants

POEM 2026 will take place in the city of Mytilene on the island of Lesvos, hosted by the University of the Aegean. This mini guide provides useful information for participants travelling to the island and exploring the surrounding area during their stay.

Reaching Lesvos Island

By Air

Lesvos is connected with mainland Greece through regular daily flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, operated by Aegean Airlines and SKY express. The airport is located a short distance from the centre of Mytilene, with taxi transfers typically taking around 10–15 minutes. Public bus connections are also available between the airport and the city centre.

By Ferry

Ferry connections are available from the port of Port of Piraeus, as well as from northern Greek ports including Port of Thessaloniki and Port of Kavala. Travel times vary depending on the route and scheduled stops, with overnight journeys commonly available from Athens. Cabin accommodation is often offered on longer ferry routes for additional comfort during travel. International ferry connections are also available from Port of Ayvalık and Port of İzmir, providing additional access from the Turkish coast to Mytilene.

Exploring Lesvos

Lesvos is known for its rich cultural heritage, coastal landscapes, traditional villages, olive groves, and unique geological sites. The island is closely associated with the ancient poet Sappho and is internationally recognised for its cultural history, local gastronomy, and distinctive natural environment, including the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

Participants are encouraged to take advantage of their visit by exploring the island before or after the conference, experiencing both the cultural character of Mytilene and the wider landscapes of Lesvos.
